Before you can use the Garmin Ais 600, you need to program it with your vessel information and install it on your boat. Here are the steps to do so:
Programming the Garmin Ais 600
To program the Garmin Ais 600, you need a PC with a Windows operating system and a USB cable. You also need to have a valid VHF license that includes your vessel call sign and Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) number. If you don't have these, contact the relevant authority in your country to obtain them.
Follow these steps to program the Garmin Ais 600:
Insert the AIS 600 Setup Disk into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive of your PC. The AIS 600 Setup should automatically run once the disk is in the drive. If not, run the Setup.exe file on the disk manually.
Select Next to begin the setup. Accept the terms and conditions and follow the on-screen instructions to install the AIS 600 Config Software.
Connect the AIS 600 to your PC with a USB cable. Connect the power cable to the AIS 600 and to a power source. Make sure that the red wire from the AIS 600 power cable is going to the positive (+) terminal of the power source, and both the black and yellow wire from the AIS 600 power cable are going to the negative (-) terminal of the power source.
Launch the AIS 600 Config Software from your PC. Select Connect to begin communication between the AIS 600 and your PC.
Enter your vessel name, FCC call sign, and MMSI number. Note that you can only enter your MMSI number once. If you enter it incorrectly, you will need to send your device to Garmin to be reset.
Select your vessel type from the drop-down menu.
Enter the distance from your vessel's bow to the GA 38 antenna in box A, from your GA 38 antenna to your vessel's stern in box B, from your vessel's port side to your GA 38 antenna in box C, and from your vessel's starboard side to your GA 38 antenna in box D.
Select Save Data to AIS 600. Select OK when prompted.
Your Garmin Ais 600 is now programmed and ready to be installed.
Installing the Garmin Ais 600
To install the Garmin Ais 600, you need a VHF antenna or a VHF/AIS antenna splitter, a NMEA 0183 or NMEA 2000 network, compatible Garmin devices, mounting hardware, and wiring accessories. You also need to follow some safety precautions, such as wearing safety goggles and a dust mask when drilling, cutting, or sanding, maintaining a safe distance from any compass or electrical medical equipment, and ensuring that no persons are within 59 in. (1.5 m) of the antenna when transmitting.
Follow these steps to install the Garmin Ais 600:
Select a suitable location for mounting the AIS 600 transceiver box. It should be at least 15 3/4 in. (40 cm) away from any compass, away from sources of heat or interference, and accessible for connecting cables.
Use the template provided in the product documentation to mark and drill four pilot holes for mounting screws.
Securely attach the transceiver box to the mounting surface with four screws.
Select a suitable location for mounting the GA 38 antenna. It should be as high as possible on your boat, away from other antennas or metal objects, and clear of any obstructions that may block radio signals.
Use a marine sealant to seal any holes where cables pass through decks or bulkheads.
