Nexus 7: A Hackers Toolkit. Part 1 - Setup and Hacking WPA Networks
If you are looking for a portable and powerful device to perform various hacking tasks, you might want to consider the Nexus 7 tablet. In this series of articles, we will show you how to turn your Nexus 7 into a hackers toolkit, using some of the most popular tools and techniques in the hacking community.
In this first part, we will cover the basic setup of your Nexus 7, including rooting, installing a custom recovery and a custom ROM, and setting up some essential apps and tools. We will also demonstrate how to use your Nexus 7 to hack WPA networks, using tools such as Aircrack-ng, Reaver and Wifite.
Rooting Your Nexus 7
Rooting your Nexus 7 is the first step to unleash its full potential as a hacking device. Rooting allows you to gain full access to the system files and settings of your device, as well as install apps that require root privileges. Rooting also enables you to install a custom recovery and a custom ROM, which we will do in the next section.
There are many ways to root your Nexus 7, but one of the easiest and safest methods is to use the Nexus Root Toolkit by WugFresh. This toolkit is compatible with all Nexus devices and supports all Android versions. You can download it from here.
Before you proceed, make sure you have enabled USB debugging on your Nexus 7. To do this, go to Settings > About tablet > Tap on Build number seven times > Go back to Settings > Developer options > Enable USB debugging.
Once you have downloaded and installed the Nexus Root Toolkit on your computer, connect your Nexus 7 to your computer via USB cable. The toolkit should automatically detect your device and its Android version. If not, you can manually select them from the drop-down menus.
Next, click on the Unlock button in the toolkit. This will unlock the bootloader of your device, which is necessary for rooting and installing a custom recovery. Note that this will wipe all data on your device, so make sure you have backed up anything important before proceeding.
Follow the on-screen instructions to unlock your bootloader. Once done, click on the Root button in the toolkit. This will root your device and install SuperSU, which is an app that manages root permissions for other apps. Follow the on-screen instructions to root your device.
Congratulations! You have successfully rooted your Nexus 7. You can verify this by opening SuperSU on your device and checking if it asks for root permissions.
Installing a Custom Recovery and a Custom ROM
A custom recovery is a software that allows you to perform various operations on your device, such as installing or restoring backups, wiping data or cache, or flashing custom ROMs or mods. A custom ROM is a modified version of Android that offers more features, performance or customization than the stock ROM.
Installing a custom recovery and a custom ROM on your Nexus 7 will give you more control over your device and enhance its capabilities as a hacking device. For example, some custom ROMs offer features such as overclocking, tethering or built-in root access.
There are many custom recoveries and custom ROMs available for the Nexus 7, but one of the most popular and stable ones is TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) and LineageOS. TWRP is a touch-based recovery that supports various file systems and encryption methods. LineageOS is a community-driven ROM that is based on Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and offers a clean and fast user experience.
To install TWRP and LineageOS on your Nexus 7, follow these steps:
Download the latest version of TWRP for your device from here. Make sure you download the correct file for your device model (2012 or 2013).
Download the latest version of LineageOS for your device from here. Again, make sure you download the correct file for your device model (grouper or flo).
